The handling of Thor’s depression in 'Avengers: Endgame' - which was released five years ago this week - was a transformative moment for the character, the MCU, and all superhero films
After Cap, Thor is my favorite character in the MCU and that is down largely to Hemsworth's portrayal. However, they took it too far with LOVE AND THUNDER. The filmmakers took all the wrong lessons from what made RAGNAROK quite possibly the best Thor movie and leaned way tooo much into the humor and made Thor a buffoon. He was funny in other movies but never an out and out buffoon as he is in that movie. Plus, RAGNAROK had Thor smiting baddies to Led Zeppelin - how cool is that?
Hemsworth has said in interviews he blames himself for letting the humor get out of hand in LOVE & THUNDER. As for RAGNAROK, it's not "quite possibly the best Thor movie." It absolutely is!
Heh! Agreed. I think Hemsworth is just being a gentleman. Writer/director Taiki Watiti certainly did his best in PR for the movie to burn his bridges with fans claiming that he wanted to make a move that would piss them off, etc. Well, mission accomplished!
I always thought Thor looked more badass at the end with the extra weight anyway. That is an excellent analysis of his character. I am curious to see how they write him moving forward. Will he be even more flippant and jokey? Or maybe more serious now? That is one thing about Thor: He has a hell of a range of directions he can go and be portrayed well. He is a complicated character.
I think he's probably my favorite MCU character, though Steve Rogers grows on me more and more as I discover the depths of what was attempted with his cinematic character with new viewings.
I think with Loki out of the picture, the character was left with very few ways forward. While I've only seen LOVE AND THUNDER once, its theme and conclusion -- how death, Thor's greatest nemesis, is faced -- seemed to get that job done and establish some kind of future in the MCU.

Captain America will always be my favorite. I'm just too nostalgic for the guy.

This is beautiful. Thank you.
You're welcome!
What are your thoughts on Love and Thunder as a continuation of his journey?
