I have very much been enjoying your newsletter, but especially the one on ones! I following John Rogers a lot in the early days of blogging, when he had made GLOBAL FREQUENCY and the pilot was not picked up. You're writing of this blog, in particular the Dracula stuff, has always reminded me of his old blog! So i can't wait to read that interview!!
I only subscribe to two substacks right now, and this being one of them! Thanks for all this great writing. ❤️
I really appreciate that, Damian. I know money isn't something most people can throw around these days without good reason. As for John, he's a great person, from all accounts. I've known him through the Writers Guild only for a year, but I'm looking forward to really digging in with him as soon as his current show lets up just a little. I'm flattered that he loves this Substack so much, as I also read his blog once upon a time.
Congratulations Cole! I also like your honesty and authenticity about why you started your Substack. As a recent joiner, I have also done the 'spiel' for myself and in the 'About' section. But secretly, I wonder whether it's more about forcing myself to be more creative and get on and write my darn 'Wilderness' book instead of getting lost in paid work or spending too much time planning and researching. Anyhow, looking forward to the next year, and well done on getting that rock-hard (writing) muscle!
Good luck on your own journey here. I'm having a wonderful time. If anything, I wish I had more energy to give to this endeavor. I hope it's giving you everything you need from the experience.
I love good film. I'm entranced by the pull of a well told tale. I support you because you bring those, along with a fantastic look behind the curtain of how it's well done. I did one screenwriting class in Uni, and my film script was literally atrocious ... because I didn't know anything, and I wasn't actually taught anything in the class (50 years ago). I've learned more about the mechanics and realities of story telling from reading you than I did in the class, or discovered by accident in the 50 years since.
I'm looking forward to when I can afford to be a paid subscriber! I totally appreciate how much effort you put in. After being on Substack for two month I completely get what you say about it wasn't about what you thought it would be. My own weekly writing calisthenics have had me wondering how anyone does this AND marathons like novels and screenplays. Then I notice the improvements, after just two months, in my nimbleness and speed. Sweet! Thanks for all the wisdom and inspiration! <3
You're very welcome, and I'm glad to have you here, Kim. As I mention in the article, evangelizing is a great way to cut through the cost. Go to that link and share it in Notes with a reason why you find 5AM STORYTALK so valuable. Do it on Facebook or other writing groups you belong to. As I mention, this smacks of self-promotion and it can't help but be, but I have a lot of "paid subscribers" right now who paid nothing for all the access. I wish I could keep it free for everyone, but I just kept justify the time I put into this if I can't even buy coffee from the effort. Thanks for reading!
Thank you so much! Substack needs you to use that link above to generate the comp'd subscriptions. This one: https://colehaddon.substack.com?r=1mimd1. But let me take a look at what I see on my recommendations tally and fix that for you if I can.

Congrats Cole! I need to go through your articles someday. I've been so busy setting up my own that I haven't been able to read yours.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Some people say they're the best articles ever written on Substack. And by "some people", I mean my wife.
Haha!
Congratulations on the anniversary. Great newsletter
Thanks, Enrique, I appreciate the kind words!

More to the point, you are fun to read!
Thanks.
This comment made my entire day, Dartz. Truly. Thank you for reading anything I write. I'm glad to hear any of it resonates with you.
You're Welcome.

I have recommended 5AM on my Substack. 3 subscribers sent your way so far!
