What a great curated list. We stumbled upon Dersu Uzala when looking for a lesser-known Kurosawa film. And we did a review: https://reidsonfilm.substack.com/p/dersu-is-built-different

Wow! Thank you for this. I also found Ballad of a Soldier, which I’ve wanted to watch since reading the novel in uni Russian, just two years after Brezhnev became First Secretary.

Thanks for this! There are a number of films here I haven't seen. Good to know they're easy to find on YouTube.

Eisenstein, so good and so nutritious— very much like whole-grain bread.

Thanks! Must watch Dersu Uzala, one of Kurosawa’s I’ve never gotten around to. Not seen Ivan’s Childhood either, so that’s a must see. Watched Come & See a year or 2 ago for the first time, having been wary after reviews describing it as ‘harrowing’. It certainly is but it should be essential viewing until we stop waging war on each other.

As far as I'm concerned, COME & SEE should be taught at the secondary school level.
