That Time I Had to Publicly Condemn My Own TV Series

'Dracula' (2013), which I created, was a protracted nightmare...but calling out my own show for perpetuating a negative stereotype was easily one of the lowest points for me

In 2013, a television series I created called “DRACULA” hit screens around the globe. Co-produced by NBC and Sky and starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers hot off “THE TUDORS”, it was for so many reasons a non-stop train of traumas that took me years to recover from. I like to describe it as a cautionary tale for any screenwriter about what can happen when all their dreams come true.

While my previous articles, the “The Horror of ‘DRACULA’: The Unbelievable True Story of the 2013 TV Series” and “More ‘The Horror of “DRACULA”’: Lessons from the Unbelievable True Story of the 2013 TV Series”, explored the development of the series and the writing of its pilot and the lessons to learn from that shitshow, I haven’t touched upon anything that occurred during production or when it aired. Today, I want to tell you about what happened when I found out something I had created, something I felt personally responsible for, perpetuated a damaging stereotype and how I ultimately chose to respond. There were so many low points for me during “DRACULA”…but this was easily one of the lowest.
